Beach Blessings

First thing is first … It’s been a busy 6 months of building a life for me and Huey in San Diego, so I apologize for the hiatus! If you believe in miracles, then this post is for you. If you don’t believe in miracles, this post is for you even more so. Now time for a little story …

Paulo Coelho said it best, “Listen to your heart. It knows all things, because it came from the soul of the world, and it will one day return there.” I have to be honest, I wasn’t always convinced about a higher power. This isn’t going to be about religion, but rather the existence of something much greater than ourselves. The older I get, the more apparent that becomes.

One of the most unfortunate facts of life is that it ends in the physical sense. It’s hard when this happens and everyone experiences a loss differently; some of us get sad, some mad , some of us get busy to forget, and some of us never really learn how to cope at all. Grief has many faces. A lot of times, people will apologize for your loss and tell you that the person will always be with you. In the moment, that never makes it any easier, but sometimes little miracles happen over time that prove this to be true. We just have to be willing and opened to embracing them.

This past weekend Brian and I had a friend visiting from his hometown. On Saturday night the three of us got to talking about life and loss. In particular, we got on the subject of Mike, a close friend of Brian’s that passed away at a very young age. Stories were shared, smiles and laughs were exchanged and their friend was remembered in such a positive way. It was a beautiful thing to watch. Jenny told us that she likes to travel with one of Mike’s shirts. This way he gets to go along on all of her adventures. She then showed us a photo from one of her trips in which she was wearing his shirt , and a light orb is shining right above her heart. At the time, I had never heard of orbs, but the story struck me as incredible and I immediately started looking into orbs and what they mean.

In short, many people feel that orbs of light seen in photographs are evidence of a spirit or angel that is nearby. There are many theories regarding different color orbs, their particular meanings and what is attempting to be communicated. For example, a blue orb is said to be a calming color associated with spiritual guidance. I read article after article and was fascinated, but, if I’m being honest … I still wasn’t completely convinced. I’m a skeptic by nature. And then, something truly magnificent happened … TWICE!

Bri left for Hawaii Sunday morning and I was laying in bed, looking through photos from over the weekend. And there it was. As plain as day… a bright blue orb in a photo from our day at the beach. To say I was speechless is an understatement. I had never noticed an orb in any of my photos before, in fact, I just learned what they were less than 24 hours ago. I like to think the bird that was inadvertently “captured” flying high in the photo is symbolic of those we have lost as well.

I immediately shared this photo with Jenny and Brian and let them know that I truly believe it was their friend, acknowledging he’s still coming along on their beach days. What a beautiful way to say hello.

A couple of days went by and this little miracle stuck with me. But, if I wasn’t convinced yet, any doubt I had was completely erased when I received the following sunset photo Brian took in Hawaii (at a different beach, with a different camera, on a different day, in a different state…).

Palm trees, a beautiful sunset , and a BRIGHT GREEN ORB high in the sky. Through tear filled eyes, I told Brian that someone is definitely still with him. It turns out that some friendships really are forever, after all.

Loss will always be a part of life. Missing loved ones will always hurt. But next time someone attempts to comfort you with the generic “They’re always with you” sentiment , remember this story. Remember these photos. And be on the lookout for your very own little miracle.
Love and Light,
